The General

The movement to achieve women's voting rights is well documented.  Suffragettes like Alice Paul and Lucy Burns are very well highlighted in the history books.  The National American Womens Suffrage Association  (NAWSA) worked tirelessly organizing parades, raising money, picketing and protesting.   In 1920, the 19th amendment guaranteed a women's right to vote.

Here is a lesser known Angel.
Rosalie Gardiner Jones

Rosalie Gardiner Jones was a dedicated supporter of the cause. Her fight to gain the right to vote covered many years.  In 1913, she hiked 200 miles in 20 days to present a petition for suffrage.  Her courage in the face of hostility, eggs and tomatoes was amazing.  Despite her many obstacles she said "I am equal to man!"

Thar He

The story of Emmett Till is known and well documented.   Emmett was a African American boy from the North who traveled south to Money, Mississippi.  He was brutally murdered by 2 ignorant racists for no rational reason.   When his assailants were acquitted, justice was clearly not served.

However, did you know about Moses Wright?
Moses Wright

During the trial of Emmett Till something historic occurred.   For the 1st time in American history an African American accused a white man of a crime in open court.  Moses Wright was a very brave man.  He knew his actions could have consequences, but he testified anyway.  In the face of some of the most vicious racists Moses Wright pointed and accused 2 white males of murder.  He said "Thar He"  Before there were sit-in's, marches, and Freedom Riders there was Moses Wright.

Amazon vs. The Little Man

This New York Times article is a great addition to any study on workers rights.  Somali workers threatening to walk out on one of the busiest days of the year. I used it this year to discuss the value of organizing.  The kids really connected.  We discussed Amazon's recruiting strategies and philosophies.  Many connections were made to the strikes of the Industrial Revolution.

Social Studies

Here is my blog.

I am a veteran Social Studies teacher who loves discussing important historical figures.

Expect posts and discussion about people in American history who stood up for their rights who tend to be overlooked in textbooks.  In addition, I enjoy finding articles in local newspapers highlighting important anniversaries in history.

I love history and I am always looking to learn something new.
